1. Zacznij od instalacji pakietów

apt-get install build-essential linux-headers-$(uname -r) module-assistant

2. Pobierz najnowszą wersję sterowników ze strony AMD.

3. Najłatwiej będzie, gdy uruchomisz później instalator z konta root'a

sh ati-driver-installer-XXXXX.x86_64.run

XXX - oznacza wersję sterowników.

4. Po zainstalowaniu sterowników również z konta root'a wydajesz polecenie

aticonfig --initial

który wygeneruje plik xorg.conf pod zamknięte sterowniki.

5. Restart.

Ten sposób działa shevchenko1987. Dziękuję.

Sam się kiedyś namęczyłem co niemiara, bo wszystkie poradniki były przestarzałe.
