Sieć na Debianie nie działa

Witam.
Sieć wygląda następująco: modem dialnetu połączony z ruterem pentagram cerberus, a ten z kolei kablem do stacjonarnego komputera z Windows XP i Kubuntu na pokładzie.
Na tym komuterze wszystko działa. Drugi komputer laptop powinien łączyć się bezprzewodowo. I na Windows XP wszystko działa.
Drugi system to Debian i tu zaczyna się kłopot bo nie wiem kompletnie jak się połączyć z siecią. Przeglądam z pomocą Google ale nigdzie nie mogę znaleźć jakiejś prostej komendy, która by łączyła z siecią. Przewodowo wystarczy wpisać

Dobrze, karta wykrywa się prawidłowo.
Podaj jeszcze zawartość pliku /etc/network/interfaces

i powiedz, czy masz zainstalowane jakieś narzędzia diagnostyczne (np wireless-tools)?

Używasz trybu tekstowego, czy środowiska graficznego, bo w sumie o to się jeszcze nie pytałem.
Generalnie wifi to jednak nie kabel i trzeba trochę więcej konfigurować. Rozumiem, że skoro mówimy o kluczu, to chodzi Ci o jedną konkretną sieć, nie o wszystkie otwarte sieci? Przynajmniej na razie?

Mam tylko wireless-tools które są zainstalowane od razu z Debianem ale nie bardzo umiem z tego korzystać. Mam tylko tryb tekstowy, no dobrze mam graficzny ale to prawie czysty fluxbox z doinstalowaną Operą więc tak jak by go nie było. Chodzi mi o jedną sieć - moją małą domową sieć zabezpieczoną kluczem wep o czym pisałem w pierwszym poście. Ale fajnie by było wiedzieć jak łączyć się z innymi otwartymi sieciami np. z darmowymi acces pointami. Ale na razie chciałbym po prostu podłączyć się do mojej sieci i skonfigurować mniej lub bardziej system.

Pierwsza komenda chyba działa. Przy następnej jest już problem- podaje nazwe mojej sieci i od razu mi ją zwraca z błędem o nieistniejącej komendzie- samą nazwe sieci bez iwconfig essid.
