Ister, założyłbyś temat związany z Twoją kartą grafiki i dostarczył trochę danych odnośnie sprzętu i systemu. Wtedy dopiero spróbuj z kimś wymieniać poglądy na temat konfiguracji sprzętu.

Dobrze, to po kolei, żeby było jasne.
Pracuję (próbuję) na notebooku Toshiba Satellite 1800-804, dokładnie takim samym jak Tritan.
Karta grafiki to Trident Microsystems CyberBlade/i1 (rev 5d), siłą rzeczy też ta sama.
Stawiam Debian/Gnu 5.0 Lenny (stable) w architekturze i386, z jądrem 2.6.26-1-686
Objawy - tak jak u Tritana - po starcie systemu wszystko się ładnie ładuje do chwili odpalenia X-ów (Gnome, ale to nie ma tu chyba nic do rzeczy). W tym momencie wszystko znika, ekran robi się czarny (bez jakichś kursorów czy innych śladów, po prostu jednolicie czarny). Nie ma reakcji na żadne klawisze (np. ctrl+alt+Fn, gdzie n dowolne od 1 do 8, a pewnie i 12). Jedyne na co reaguje to przytrzymanie klawisza ,,Power'' - co (jeśli się nie przesadzi) wywołuje miękkie zamknięcie systemu.

Zauważyłem, że ścieżka do fontów nie wskazuje na nic sensownego. Może tu jest problem?
Doinstalowałem xfs, ale to też nie pomogło. Nadal czarny ekran.
Zakomentowałem w xorg.conf linię ładującą moduł type1 (zasugerowane tutaj: https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/36870 bez zmian. No, tyle, że się błąd nie pojawia w logach.

Nie wiem co dalej...

Jeszcze jedno. Znalazłem, że fonty są w /usr/share/fonts/X11/, a nie w /usr/share/X11/fonts/. Wykonałem więc

ln -s /usr/share/fonts/X11 /usr/share/X11/fonts

co wprawdzie nie pomogło (nadal czarny ekran), ale usunęła większość (oprócz cyrylicy, CID i dwóch nt. defomy) ostrzeżeń z początku logu.
Doinstalowałem defoma, cyrylicę i x-ttcidfont-conf, zakomentowałem pierwszą linijkę nt. CID. Ostrzeżenia w logach już nie mam, jednak efekt ,,startx'' pozostaje bez zmian - piękny czarny ekran.
Biorę się za sprawdzanie jak to Knoppix robi.
Nic nie rozumiem. Knoppix działa przyzwoicie (nie wykorzystuje całej powierzchni ekranu, ale to pikuś). Korzysta ze sterowników trident. Chodzi na KDE. Zapisałem knoppixowego xorg.conf, spróbowałem odpalić z debiana X-y i... cóż za zaskoczenie - czarny ekran.

@fnmirk: nie tworzyłem nowego wątku właśnie dlatego, że mój problem to jest DOK£ADNIE ten sam problem co ten tutaj. Znalazłem ten wątek szukając po modelu notebooka. Czy naprawdę uważasz, że powinienem założyć własny, niezależny wątek. Czy właśnie to nie byłoby pogwałceniem regulaminu forum (dublowanie wątków)? Natomiast chętnie zmodyfikowałbym temat na coś w rodzaju:
Toshiba Satellite 1800-804 - środowisko graficzne zawiesza system
ewentualnie z dodaną w opisie kartą grafiki.

Dobrze to zostaniemy w tym temacie. Najwyżej doda się jakiś dopisek przy temacie.

Zainstaluj pakiet: ddccontrol, zrestartuj komputer i uruchom w trybie tekstowym. Następnie wykonaj polecenia:

Zainstalowałem. Tryb tekstowy uruchamiam już od dłuższego czasu ;-)

Zrobiłem. X -configure wpuścił mnie w czarny ekran. Restart komputera.

Niestety, czarny ekran. log wrzucę za chwilę (jak się położy i na nowo wystartuje system).

Z fontami już sobie poradziłem. Jak również z paroma innymi problemami, które się po drodze pojawiły. Ale X-y za ... nic nie chcą ruszyć.

Niestety. Poprawiony xorg.conf nie pomógł. Skrypt sgfxi nie obsługuje tej karty grafiki:

a ja coraz bardziej skłaniam się ku próbie instalacji Etcha. Bo skoro pod (starym) Knoppixem (5.1.1) chodzi? Mnie tam wodotryski nie są potrzebne.
Mam wrażenie, że problem jednak nie leży w X-ach, tylko w sterowniku...

U mnie działa.

Bardzo dziękuję fnmirkowi za pomoc. Bez niej pewnie już dawno bym się poddał. Teraz muszę posprzątać jakieś 10 różnych konfiguracji i wywalić KDE :-D
